July Family Portrait Session at Red Rocks

I was contacted about this family's first Colorado Family Portrait Session, as they are relatively new to Colorado.  Krista had suggested an area with a lot of trees close to the Highlands Ranch areas where they lived.  But in communicating about locations, I also threw out Red Rocks Park, and though she mentioned "maybe next year," I suggested going ahead and choosing Red Rocks for their location.

Before their family portraits, I walked the grounds a few minutes before they arrived.  Then made some quick introductions to other family members when they got there, and we talked for just a few minutes about my ideas for their family portraits.

Krista had given me some goals; mainly what pictures she wanted, as the photos from their family portrait session would make their way to the family's holiday cards.  And as we walked from one location to another I was able to not only get the requested photos, but also some of the girls being themselves in some candid portrait shots.

This time of year, the Colorado Wildflowers seem refreshed every week as something always seems to be blooming.  And with a late afternoon session, not only did we utilize some of the day's best natural light… but for many of the photos the gently swaying amber grass caught the sun's late day rays.

It's always fun getting to work with families, getting the opportunity to tell their story, utilize Colorado's amazing scenery… and pull in some artistic vision as well to make each family's portrait session different from my last and unique.

Family Portraits in Golden, Colorado

With summer in full swing, it's a very popular time of year for family portraits... and a great example of a recent one is this family photography session in Golden, Colorado.  Many of the state's wildflowers are blooming, and the grass has started to turn to its lighter amber shades... which is great for catching the sunlight at the optimal times of day for family portraits.

I was excited to get out with this family, as this guy is at that age, where parents cherish every moment.  And every split second seems to be another unique expression.

And bringing along the family dog to a portrait session, is always a lot of fun.  Posed and candid, this family was great to work with and the photos (more seen here) will serve as a reminder of this chapter in their lives, for years to come.

Senior Portraits Season!

Even though summer is in Full swing, the 2017-2018 school year is just around the corner.  And many outdoor locations are looking great, with wildflowers and tall grassy meadows; perfect for capturing your Senior Portraits.

Even though weekends are ideal for many families, I do also book a number of Senior Portrait Sessions on the weekdays! Often times locations have a lot fewer people on the weekdays, which is great in being able to fully utilize the location selected for your Senior Portraits.

So, avoid the Fall rush... get in touch with me, and let's get out and tell your story in photos with some incredible Senior Portraits.

A foggy day's reflections

a foggy day on a reservoir in the Colorado mountains, with reflections of the waters edge in the calm waters
Reflections on a foggy day

On Friday, my schedule freed a little allowing me some extra time to myself between clients.  I don't always agree that a rainy day is "bad weather," as I'm drawn to all seasons, all weather (I still prefer the 'cold and caked in snow' winter days); each creating their own mood and mindset.  I've called the Boulder County foothills home, not just physically... but home in a mental/emotional state as well.  Nature here for me is centering... grounding... rejuvenating.  And on the New Supermoon for June, it may have been more than a coincidence that I ended up with a little extra time to walk to the water's edge and reflect.

In life there are no guarantees, we can't always see what's around the next bend... or what's ahead in the fog.  So I sat and reflected on what's happening in life... where I want to be... and with whom.

A lot of great things have happened up here, and this day reminded me of another in particular where while kayaking, just ahead of me, was my "with whom."

The still waters allowed me to see through to the bottom, the foundation of what lays ahead.  As we embark on our journeys in life, those foundations run deep... but even as life fills up they are there to get us to the other side.  It's those foundations that support everything else;  because with them 'Nothing else matters,' and everything else is just something to deal with and overcome; rain and drizzle, fog... all temporary.  We've been here before and have 'more than a felling' that the other side, that the journey, that the goal is there.

The bend on the South Platte

When I moved back home to Colorado nine years ago I often would visit family in Park County, and on my return trips home I would find "alternate" routes to explore Colorado and get lost in nature.  In ways I was avoiding the interstate, but I always in life enjoying the road less traveled, and exploring... finding new and cool places to visit and experience.   After my last time (hard to believe I haven't been back since, but Colorado is a big place) I did quite a bit of research on the area... mainly to figure out the history of the area and the South Platte Hotel that still stands.

the Platte River flows around a bend, and a large rock formation in the Colorado mountains.

But in life we learn from the past, and I wanted to revisit this stretch of old railway that runs along the edge of the South Platte River.   Looking back I saw what I had done then, but like any photographer, or person in life, we find new and better ways of doing things.  Of capturing the beauty of nature... or wanting to return to a place that we enjoyed before, even when we know things might be slightly different... but also that things can be done better.

The Platte River flows through a Colorado canyon on a summer afternoon.

Maybe it was because it was a week day, but there weren't a lot of people along the river's edge.  A fisherman here and there.  An occasional car would pass along the dirt roads, kicking up enough dust to be seen in the distance.  But I had enough space to myself, to unwind... relax... fight with some ducks over a rock to sit on; you know... the usual.  And of course, finding a new way to look at this place... to experience and capture it.  We all evolve, and looking back is sometimes the best way to learn... and make things better in the future.

Engagement Session in Boulder Colorado; Emma + Brendan

Getting to work with Emma and Brendan for their Engagement Session was in itself a pleasure, and a lot of fun.  But for them it was also a warm up (if you will) to their upcoming Wedding and Reception in Boulder, Colorado.  Over a cup of coffee at our first wedding consultation, we got to know one another a little, as well as take a look at my portfolio… giving them the opportunity to see how I've told the stories of past clients through my photography.

Emma was hoping for snow, and while it might not have been a snowy day… there was at least a little on the ground when we met at Chautauqua Park in Boulder for the first segment of their Engagement Session.  We had coordinated meeting at a few locations; offering them the ability to not just utilize a couple of the amazing locations around Boulder, but also change outfits between locations… and of course, have their dogs with them for the first segment.

At Chautauqua Park, we had the expected amazing backdrop of the Flatirons with grassy meadows that still had evidence of the last snowfall.  And Emma and Brendan's choice of attire couldn't have been more perfect as it not only reflected who they are, but worked amazingly well for this location.  With a few minutes of posing advice before we actually began, I could already see the two of them getting more comfortable with the session.  After all, it's not about me… it's their story, and I'm just there to capture it.

As we moved on from Chautauqua, a friend of theirs met them to take care of the dogs; Brendan and I had the opportunity to talk a little more as Emma ran inside for a quick outfit change.  Then we were off for Part 2 of the Engagement Session.  Without the dogs, this segment of their session was a little more about just the two of them; the connection they share with one another.  And by this time (even with the colder weather) the two of them became extremely comfortable, and just naturals in front of the camera.
