Family Portraits in Boulder, Colorado

Boulder Family Portraits

James called me looking for portraits since family was visiting from out of town.  Well, actually it was his mother that suggested getting everyone out for some photos while they were all together.  And I'm glad I was able to get out with them, because you can't really ask for a nicer family.

The family portrait session with them at Boulder's Chautauqua Park went seamlessly... in fact maybe a little too easy?   I don't know.  But before I knew it we were finished; I had gotten all the shots and then some.  And most importantly, the little one's were happy.  Some "airplane" and "tickle monster" helped to be honest; and the candid's from that are about as priceless as it gets.

Fall is such a great time of the year to get out for family portraits; the colors, meadows of tall grass, Colorado's natural scenery... so thanks to James and his family for the opportunity to get out with you and tell a little piece of your story in photographs!

Wedding at the St. Julien in Boulder, Colorado

Although Elaine had contacted me about a year ago for her wedding, I finally got to meet her and Greg this past winter.  She had sent me a lot of the details in the regards to the who, where, and how... but meeting in person is always a request of mine to personally get to know a couple.  How they met, a little bit about who they are and where they are from came out in their meeting; most importantly though was getting to know their personalities.  We discussed the family who would be there, the details of the ceremony... and Elaine through her description of the everything helped me visualize the photography aspect.  More from a how to tell their story perspective, than anything else.  And even though the venue changed, I still from this first meeting got a little taste of who they were as a couple.

At our second meeting, at the new venue, we went more into detail about the shots that they really wanted of their day.  And, of course, bounced some ideas off one another for the dress and ring shot.  As sometimes happens, things changed a bit.  With the weather being overcast on the actual wedding day, the clouds hovered over the Flatirons in the distance.  Which actually set a mellow tone for the day.  The rings still photographed how we had envisioned; the dress though a different matter.  I had already photographed the dress elsewhere when Elaine returned it to her changing room and left to greet her "biologicals." And as I walked through the room, the dress... on a coat rack with the sun pouring through the large windows caught my eye.  That was the shot.  Timeless. Elegant.

As the Reverend arrived, he greeted Greg, and the two of them waited patiently in the hallway; Elaine getting ready with the help of her daughter.  But the time had come, and Elaine propped open the door to her room, ready to approach Greg for their 'first look' shot.  With everyone else gathered outside, the two of them took a moment to watch their families gather, moments before thwo one would officially become one.

The Wedding in it's entirety really reflected these two individuals. Elegant (with maybe a touch of 'garden party'), modest, intimate... and utilizing an incredible view.

For the mass and readings portions of their ceremony they sat next to one another, smiles gleaming... holding each other's hands.  And when it came time to take their vows, the look in their faces, and smiles towards each other was unmistakable to two people in love.

We had discussed the formals, but I never mentioned the 'crazy pose' ones.  So it was a little bit of a surprise to the ladies when I asked.  But they got into it, and had fun.  And it was almost like an icebreaker to get them a little more relaxed for the rest of the shots.  I've been very fortunate to get to work with some incredible people, Elaine and Greg no exception.  It truly was an honor to get to meet and work with them, and I hope their future together is full of happy days, making lasting memories.

Liza’s Sweet 16 Portrait Session in Boulder Colorado

Boulder Colorado Portrait Session

I got the call from Liza’s mother, who was looking for some portraits for her daughter’s milestone birthday.  She had seen my work online and felt I could capture her daughter on her special day in just the way they were looking for.  Balloons, bubbles… and even a guitar were brought along for the session.  Liza was a natural… able to move from one pose to another, yet doing it all with her own personal touch.

Both Liza and her mother had compiled a number of photos for me, showing their ideas... and how they wanted Liza's to look.  And Chautauqua Park in Boulder Colorado offered the perfect backdrops for her photos.

The example photos they showed me were great... showed me their vision of how they wanted to photos to look.  So I took them, added my own touch... and created unique photos that really brought out who Liza is, and her personality.

Autumn Maternity Session in Golden, Colorado

Colorado Maternity Session

When Gift first called me, she commented on how much she liked my photography. "But do you do maternity sessions?"  "Does my sister in law count?" I replied.  "It seems a lot like an Engagement Session, but with just one extra person... i'll google poses"  Well I was honest with her, and she still booked the shoot.

So we met on a mid-autumn afternoon along Clear Creek in Golden, Colorado.  I knew the colors were at their peak... and there was a lot of photo opportunities with the river and it's surrounding trees.  We got to talking about Atlanta; she has roots there and I lived there for a decade.  She and Mike were waiting to find out if it was a boy or girl until she delivered; which with just a month to go would not be long.  And the way these two looked at each other I knew that the baby is lucky to have two loving parents.

Engagement Session in Arvada, CO.... with horses!

When Heather first contacted me I was of course happy to work with her and her fiance on an Engagement/Wedding Photography Package combination here in Colorado.  Initially via an email, and then on the phone I already had a good picture of her and Robert through their backgrounds, but also a little of what they were looking for.  Heather has a Pinterest account, so it was easy to see what she was looking for and conceptualize their Engagement Session.

And then she mentioned she wanted their horses included in the Engagement Session.  Which as an animal lover, I was more than a little thrilled about.  Though for a moment I was a little concerned, just due to the nature of them being in the photo session.  I'm from Colorado... sure I've been around horses plenty... but in a shoot?

So I showed up a little early, which not only gave me the chance to talk to Heather, but play with... I mean get to know... horses as well.

It may have been a late winter morning; no leaves yet on the trees, and lots of clouds in the sky.  But the focus was on them, and the rest... just part of their story.

Red Rocks Park Engagement Session - Olivia & Loren

Colorado engagement photography
Colorado Engagement Photography

If there's one thing you can say about the weather in Colorado this time of year, it would be unpredictable.  And when you're an Engagement Photographer who works outdoors, that means being ready and prepared for anything; especially when sessions are usually booked weeks if not months in advance.  But it also means that the client(s) have to be just as prepared.  And, luckily I had the pleasure of working with Olivia and Loren... who just as I, were not afraid of a little snow.  The session has actually been booked by Loren's mom, as a gift.  So though he and I had some quick communications before meeting in person, I could tell just a little extra hint of hesitation and unease when meeting Olivia for the first time. But it didn't take long for these two to loosen up (though maybe it was the partial 'Red Rocks Boot Camp' I put them through by walking up and down all those stairs).  And though some shots were posed, the two of them practically forgot I was there... remembering it was all about them... and truly letting their personalities shine through for some amazing photographs.
