Autumn Maternity Session in Golden, Colorado

When Gift first called me, she commented on how much she liked my photography. "But do you do maternity sessions?"  "Does my sister in law count?" I replied.  "It seems a lot like an Engagement Session, but with just one extra person... i'll google poses"  Well I was honest with her, and she still booked the shoot.

So we met on a mid-autumn afternoon along Clear Creek in Golden, Colorado.  I knew the colors were at their peak... and there was a lot of photo opportunities with the river and it's surrounding trees.  We got to talking about Atlanta; she has roots there and I lived there for a decade.  She and Mike were waiting to find out if it was a boy or girl until she delivered; which with just a month to go would not be long.  And the way these two looked at each other I knew that the baby is lucky to have two loving parents.

Engagement Session in Arvada, CO.... with horses!

When Heather first contacted me I was of course happy to work with her and her fiance on an Engagement/Wedding Photography Package combination here in Colorado.  Initially via an email, and then on the phone I already had a good picture of her and Robert through their backgrounds, but also a little of what they were looking for.  Heather has a Pinterest account, so it was easy to see what she was looking for and conceptualize their Engagement Session.

And then she mentioned she wanted their horses included in the Engagement Session.  Which as an animal lover, I was more than a little thrilled about.  Though for a moment I was a little concerned, just due to the nature of them being in the photo session.  I'm from Colorado... sure I've been around horses plenty... but in a shoot?

So I showed up a little early, which not only gave me the chance to talk to Heather, but play with... I mean get to know... horses as well.

It may have been a late winter morning; no leaves yet on the trees, and lots of clouds in the sky.  But the focus was on them, and the rest... just part of their story.

Red Rocks Park Engagement Session - Olivia & Loren

Colorado Engagement Photography

If there's one thing you can say about the weather in Colorado this time of year, it would be unpredictable.  And when you're an Engagement Photographer who works outdoors, that means being ready and prepared for anything; especially when sessions are usually booked weeks if not months in advance.  But it also means that the client(s) have to be just as prepared.  And, luckily I had the pleasure of working with Olivia and Loren... who just as I, were not afraid of a little snow.  The session has actually been booked by Loren's mom, as a gift.  So though he and I had some quick communications before meeting in person, I could tell just a little extra hint of hesitation and unease when meeting Olivia for the first time. But it didn't take long for these two to loosen up (though maybe it was the partial 'Red Rocks Boot Camp' I put them through by walking up and down all those stairs).  And though some shots were posed, the two of them practically forgot I was there... remembering it was all about them... and truly letting their personalities shine through for some amazing photographs.

A Winter Mood in Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Steamboat Springs Colorado, winter sunset

There's just something magical about winter.  And I know to many, it's a time to bundle up and stay indoors.  And even I enjoy those kind of winter days... a fire in the wood-stove, while the snow gently falls outside.  But it's also a time that I enjoy getting out, exploring... and seeing what Mother Nature offers; while she blankets the scenery in a layer of snow.

There's a sense of peace and quiet, as if everything is tucked away until the warmer spring months return.  Well, maybe.  The animals still get out and forage for food... the larger two legged ones flocking to the snow for the chance to catch a face-shot in some knee high powder.   So just as in the other seasons of the year, it's fun to sit and watch as the world happens... taking in each moment and storing it in the mind and through the lens of the camera.

Autumn Engagement Session in Colorado - Lauren & Scott

When I first got the call from Lauren I knew this engagement session was going to be a lot of fun; and one that was right up my alley.  She wanted golden aspens and open meadows… and had showed me some examples of the feel she was looking for in her photos.

"Aspens" were a definite must have for Lauren, and in Denver are somewhat hard to come by… at least in large groves and somewhere that we wouldn't have a lot of other people around.  So that pretty much eliminated most of the parks in Denver; most of the trees being other hardwood species.

But after going back and forth on ideas, we found this perfect spot in the foothills, where I knew there would be tons of aspens in their peak colors.  Now if only we could get mother nature to cooperate.  As always the case in Colorado, Mother Nature is about as unpredictable as it gets; especially in the foothills and anywhere further west.  Luckily she and her fiancĂ© Scott were able to meet me an hour early… which ended up making all the difference in the world.

Once we met up and got to our first spot, I went through the usual getting to know them questions… so I could tell their story.  As I got to know them the best response was to how they met, and got engaged. "He just threw this ring at me," she replied.  I still laugh.

Well the location didn't disappoint.  And even though the storms were rolling in we were able to utilize everything about the area for a really fun session.  Though I'm familiar with this area (and live nearby) this was a great place to get Lauren and Scott out into… for the scenery, and a fun couple of hours.  Aspens, check.  Mountain meadows, check.

They were so much fun to work with, and even though they were a little nervous about the session… they had a great time and it really shows in their photos.  I wish them all the best in planning their Napa Valley Wedding next fall… and for all the years that follow.

Foothills Family Session... Boulder

No two families are ever alike... but then there are those that share values, or at least are similar to yours in where and how you choose to live your life.  That's why I was thrilled to get to work with this family who lives in my area.

There's definitely a style to living in the foothills, or mountains; the love of the outdoors... the connection to nature... and how some kids are just drawn to things that move in the tall grass.

Though I'm usually such a small part of a families life; the hour or so I get to spend with them... intuition and being observant is also so helpful in capturing not only a family's story, their dynamics... but also capturing the priceless kids expressions.

These are the memories that the parents will always remember; whether just that day... or the stage of life that the photos serve to capture for years to come.

Snow comes to the Colorado Rockies... finally!!!

a photograph of the Colorado Mountains during an autumn snowstorm

It's been an an usually warm fall so far this year... and though it's always nice to have a break from the hefty utility bills that winter brings (or depleting the wood pile that so painstakingly cut, split, and stack), the seasons first snow is always a welcome event.

But as the autumn colors are drawing to a near, it's nice to have the next fun thing to be out in... to photograph ('mud season' is never much fun, especially as the dogs love to track it all in the house).

Though the warm days are missed, there's just nothing like cooler temperatures outside.... and a good book, a rocking chair... and a roaring fire inside.
